Local News in Brief : Countywide : Jet Is Rerouted After Hydraulic System Fails
An American Airlines BAe-146 en route from San Jose to John Wayne Airport was diverted to Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday afternoon when a hydraulic system failure forced the pilot to extend the jetliner’s landing gear manually, authorities said.
A spokeswoman for the airline said the 38 passengers aboard Flight 1208 were bused to John Wayne Airport after a safe landing at LAX.
A warning light indicated that the hydraulic system was overheating each time the pilot attempted to lower the gear, the spokeswoman said. She added that a “safe” light came on after the gear was extended manually.
Airline officials said the plane landed at LAX because of its longer runways and more extensive repair facilities. A decision about whether to return the plane to service was scheduled to be made late Wednesday night.
