World : Guatemalan Inmates End Standoff

SANTA CATARINA PINULA, Guatemala — Armed inmates holding hundreds of hostages inside Guatemala’s largest prison signed an accord with the government today, ending a five-day revolt, prison spokesman Conrado Monroy said.
Monroy said under the accord, which was signed at 10:30 a.m., the rebellious inmates agreed to surrender their weapons and free the hostages. Monroy said Red Cross officials and firefighters had begun arriving near the prison to help hostages when they were released.
