College Roundup : UC Irvine Beats UCLA on Young’s Single
First baseman Brian Young singled with two outs in the ninth inning to give UC Irvine a 6-5 victory over UCLA Wednesday night in a nonconference game at Irvine.
Young’s single scored Al Rodriguez, who led off the inning with a single. Steve May (2-2) pitched the ninth inning for the victory.
Irvine (10-15-1) trailed in the sixth, 3-1, but took the lead with a four-run rally. Young drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Mike Goodcase had an RBI single. The Anteaters scored the other two runs on an error and wild pitch.
UCLA (11-18) cut the deficit to 5-4 in the eighth, as Robbie Katzaroff’s sacrifice fly scored Mannie Adams. The Bruins tied the score in the ninth on a RBI single by Adams.
In NAIA nonconference baseball:
Southern California College 7, Biola 6--Host Southern California College scored two runs in the ninth on four walks and error for the victory. SCC (16-11) loaded the bases on two walks and an error with one out. Kevin Kasper walked to force in the first run and Joe Averasa walked on a full count to force in the winning run.
In nonconference men’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Chapman 0--Paul Heidmann had eight kills as the Anteaters (6-22) swept 15-6, 15-11, 15-13, at Irvine.
