West Hollywood : Homeless Shelter Reopens
A homeless shelter that was closed abruptly on March 10 amid reports of violence and drug-related problems has reopened.
City officials reopened the shelter at West Hollywood Park Auditorium on Monday, as scheduled, after reorganizing its operations and providing additional training to shelter workers.
The shelter was ordered closed by City Manager Paul Brotzman after social workers complained to city officials that conditions had worsened and that some shelter workers had expressed concern for their safety.
Thirty-two people housed at the shelter were given vouchers for free accommodations at a Hollywood motel or a nearby YMCA while the shelter was closed, Brotzman said.
The city has operated the shelter from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily for up to 50 people since last June, when it began enforcing a midnight-to-6 a.m. curfew in the city’s parks, where many of the homeless had been living.
City officials have said that they will continue to operate the facility until a $1.2-million permanent shelter, planned for a warehouse on the city’s east side, opens early next year.
