College Roundup : Moorpark Loses, 2-1, in 13 on Far-Fetched Play

Moorpark College fell victim to a freakish play in the 13th inning and lost a nonconference softball game to Saddleback, 2-1, Thursday at Moorpark.

In order to thwart an intentional walk in final inning, Denise Cuhns flung her bat at a wide pitch and dribbled the ball in front of the plate. Moorpark catcher Missy Cress overthrew first base, allowing the winning run to score from second.

“She definitely caught our entire ballclub off balance,” Moorpark Coach Will Thurston said.

Cuhns did her early damage on the mound, however, scattering six hits--none for extra bases--in the complete-game win.

Moorpark (20-9) scored in the seventh inning when Gina Duarte singled in Kelly Kaufman.

Moorpark left 13 runners on base and no Lady Raider had more than one hit.

In other softball games:

Cal State Northridge 5-2, Santa Clara 2-5--Although the Lady Matadors (26-12) outhit Santa Clara, 22-9, they settled for a split in the nonconference doubleheader at LaFayette Field in Santa Clara.

Heather Lindstrom (7-3) gave up two hits and struck out four in five innings in the first game. Christy Alves picked up the save.

Alves (3-4) took the loss in the second game, however, giving up three runs on two hits in the first inning before being relieved by Krista Miller in the second.

Anna Getherall, Erin McGuire, Jamie Berkman and Leilani Artis all had two hits in the first game for CSUN. Artis drove in Erin McGuire and Berkman with a two-run double.

BASEBALL

L. A. Harbor 6, Mission 0--Harbor’s George Parga (2-0) pitched a no-hitter and needed only Mike Kristy’s solo home run to ensure victory.

Harbor is 7-1-1 in the Southern California Athletic Conference.

Canyons 6, Pierce 4--Ernie Perez stole home in the third inning to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead and what proved to be the winning run in a Western State Conference game at Pierce.

Perez, who singled and advanced to third on a throwing error before the steal, went three for four with three runs and two runs batted in.

Pierce starter Pete Dragaloski (3-2) gave up five unearned runs and walked seven while striking out three.

The Brahmas launched an eighth-inning comeback when Jeremy Lipton reached first on a fielder’s choice, advanced to third on Tony Dello’s single and scored on Billy Morris’ single to center. Josh Davis drove in Dello with a single to cut the Cougars’ lead to 6-2. With two out, Pierce pulled to within 6-4 when Doug Johns doubled to left, scoring Morris and Davis.

Bakersfield 5, Valley 4--The Monarchs were held to three hits and stranded 11 runners in the WSC game at Bakersfield.

Bakersfield scored three runs in a sixth as Valley committed two errors, a wild pitch and a balk.

The Monarchs (20-4-1, 5-3) scored in the ninth to cut the deficit to a run.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 8, Santa Monica 1--Top-seeded Sang Kim paced the Brahmas by defeating Esazaki Rasuhiro, 6-0, 6-1, in a Western State Conference match at Pierce.
