High School Track : Williamson, Thousand Oaks Outrun Camarillo
Mike Williamson turned in an impressive distance double as he and his Thousand Oaks teammates recorded a 102-39 victory over Camarillo in a Marmonte League dual meet on Thursday.
Williamson, runner-up in last year’s state Division I cross-country championships, won the 1,600 meters in a personal best of 4 minutes, 18.6 seconds and the 3,200 in 9:26.1 to help the Lancers rebound from last week’s upset loss to Newbury Park.
While he was a comfortable winner in the 1,600--Shawn Goetzinger of Camarillo placed second in 4:24.2--Williamson had to gun down the Scorpions’ Abe Valdez in the last 50 meters of the 3,200. Valdez, who placed third in the 1,600 (4:28.1), ran 9:26.3.
Mike Lindsay won three events for Thousand Oaks (2-1, 2-1 in league meets). He took the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.8, the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.4 and the long jump at 21 feet, 2 inches.
Camarillo (1-4, 0-3) was led by Chad Malesich, who won the 800 in 2:03.8, and John Crumrine, who won the pole vault at 12-6.
In other boys’ meets:
Royal 76, Simi Valley 60--Robert Blumquist won three events and teammate Clint Guy won two as the Highlanders defeated the Pioneers in a Marmonte League meet at Royal.
Blumquist won the 880 in 2:04.8, the mile in 4:45.3 and the two mile in 10:37.4. Guy was victorious in the long jump (20-4) and triple jump (41-9 1/2).
Rio Mesa 76, Ventura 59--Lester Smith won two events with personal-best performances for Rio Mesa in a Channel League meet at Ventura.
Smith won the long jump at 21-2 1/2 and the triple jump at 44-8 1/4 for the Spartans (3-0), the three-time defending league champions.
Hart 77, Burbank 50--Todd Lewis of Burbank turned in a superb triple in the Foothill League meet at Burbank.
Lewis, runner-up in the 1,600 at last year’s Southern Section 3-A Division championships, won the 800 meters in 2:01.0; the 1,600 in 4:27.7 and the 3,200 in 9:42.2.
Westlake 86, Newbury Park 50--The Warriors won eight of 10 running events, including both relays, to win the Marmonte League meet at Newbury Park.
Erik Holcomb led Westlake with a victory in the 440 (52.3) and teammate Chris Edwards won the 120-yard high hurdles in 15.4.
GIRLS
Royal 81, Simi Valley 45--Sophomore Wende Brown won three events, setting personal bests in each, as the Highlanders romped to an easy win in the Marmonte League meet at home.
Brown won the 440-yard dash in 1:02.0, the long jump at 17-0 1/2 and the triple jump at 33-5 1/2 for Royal (2-0, 2-0).
Rio Mesa 89, Ventura 37--Angela Burnham and Shannon Wiebelhaus led the Spartans (3-0) to victory in the Channel League meet at Ventura.
Burnham, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meters, won the 100 in 12.4 and the 220 yards in 26.2. Wiebelhaus took the 330-yard low hurdles in 50.1 and the triple jump at 32-9.
Burnham also ran legs on the victorious 440 (50.3) and mile relays (4:20.7), and Wiebelhaus ran the second leg on the 440 relay.
