San Diego’s Jess Stayrook won one match in the stepladder final to finish third in the $500,000 Seagram’s Coolers Open, the richest tournament on the Professional Bowlers Assn. tour, at Edmond, Okla.
Stayrook defeated Harry Sullins, 226-195, before losing to eventual champion Mike Aulby, 234-222, in the next-to-last match. Stayrook earned $50,000.
Aulby took advantage of three open frames by Jim Pencak for a 195-178 victory in the title game. Ge earned $100,000 for his 17th career PBA title and third victory this year. He has won three of his last four tournaments.
Aulby has earned $172,985 for the year, a record for the Winter Tour, eclipsing Bob Benoit’s $155,630 last year.
Aulby grabbed an early lead when Pencak, the top qualifier, missed a single-pin spare in the second frame. Pencak fell 22 pins back when he failed to convert a split in the third frame. A missed spare by Aulby in the fourth frame got Pencak to within five pins, but Aulby then struck on three of his next four shots and coasted to the victory.
