MGM/UA Communications Co.: Despite the box-office success of “Rain Man,” the Beverly Hills entertainment company reported a second-quarter loss of $14.7 million, compared to a loss of $4.7 million a year ago, due to increased amortization of films and writedowns on unsuccessful films, the firm said. Revenue rose to $242 million, up 53%. Although interest expense of $14.7 million exceeded interest expense a year ago, the firm noted that it repaid its bank debt in mid-January and expects to report interest income in the third quarter.
