Community College Roundup : Relievers Spark Cypress Past Fullerton

Cypress College received strong relief pitching from Ron Brown and Rich Lodding to hold off Fullerton, 4-3, Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game at Cypress.

Brown pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings for the victory and Lodding went the final 2 1/3 for the save.

Fullerton scored three runs in the top of the third inning on only one hit. The Hornets (9-16 overall, 4-8 in conference play) received three walks, one of which forced in a run. Fullerton’s other runs came on a ground out and a sacrifice fly.

Brown (2-1) entered the game with no outs and the bases loaded. He retired the side and allowed only one hit until being relieved in the seventh after he loaded the bases on walks.

Lodding, normally a starter, replaced Brown with the Chargers leading, 4-3. He retired eight consecutive batters, striking out three, for his first save.

The Chargers (22-9, 8-4) tied the score, 3-3, in the fourth on a two-run double by Terry Tewell. Mitch Kaylor then hit a solo homer down the left-field line in the fifth to give Cypress a 4-3 lead.

Golden West 5, Riverside 4--The Rustlers (13-10-1, 7-5) scored four runs in the eighth inning as Dan Villegas singled to drive in Jeff Repoz with the winning run. Todd Long picked up the victory, allowing eight hits in nine innings after taking over from starting pitcher Toby Foreman. Foreman walked the leadoff batter before coming out with pulled back muscles.

Rancho Santiago 10, Saddleback 2--Conrad Colby had three hits and three runs batted in for the Dons (19-10, 9-3) at Saddleback. Louie Maldanado and Marty Neff each had two RBIs for Rancho Santiago. John McTaggart had three hits, including two doubles, and Greg Martineau had two hits and an RBI for the Dons.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Cypress 9, Fullerton 0--No. 1 singles player Eric Glade swept 6-0, 6-1, and No. 1 doubles team Todd Morrison and Rich Walker won, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, as the Chargers improved to 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the Orange Empire Conference.

Saddelback 9, Rancho Santiago 0--Saddleback (15-1, 8-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, received a strong performance from Ed Peregrino in winning at Saddleback. Peregrino defeated Omar Sary, 6-3, 6-3, in singles play. He then teamed with Carl Hines to defeat Dan Manounyaiong and Russ Segawa, 6-0, 6-1, in doubles.
