Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : Salad-Oil Spill Closes Lanes of Newport Blvd.
A 55-gallon barrel of salad oil spilled its entire contents from the back of a stakebed truck in Newport Beach Wednesday, coating a large stretch of the southbound lanes of Newport Boulevard.
Samuel Head, 51, of Pico Rivera apparently stopped too quickly, causing the barrel to fall over, said Newport Beach police spokesman Bob Oakley.
The 10:02 a.m. accident closed the southbound lanes for about 4 hours as city and Caltrans work crews used special machines to remove the oil with steam.
Head was cited by police for the spillage of an unsecured load. Oakley said that the barrel was not properly sealed at the top. No one was injured.
