USC Elections
Scott Harris’ stories on the student body elections at USC were well done and interesting (Metro, March 24-25). This sometimes fierce competition between the fraternity-backed “conservatives” and mostly independent “liberals” has been going on 40 years at USC.
Forty years ago the Daily Trojan and its investigative reporters determined that the student body election had fraudulent voting. The election was void and the new ballot elected USC’s first independent president, Bob Padgett. One of his main supporters was an aspiring student politician--Jesse M. Unruh, later Speaker of the California Assembly, state treasurer and a major player for years in Democratic politics.
