NAMES IN THE NEWS : First Lady Hails Abortion March
WASHINGTON — Barbara Bush, who refuses to publicly discuss her views on abortion, today hailed the march on Washington Sunday by more than 300,000 supporters of legal abortions.
In a response to an inquiry on her reaction to the march, the First Lady’s press secretary, Anna Perez, quoted her as saying: “That’s what America is all about. It’s great.”
There were signs along the march that read: “Barbara Bush Is for Abortion.” But she has refrained from discussing the touchy issue, particularly since President Bush has taken a strong stand against abortion and the Justice Department has intervened strongly in the current case before the Supreme Court to overturn the Roe vs. Wade case that legalized abortion.
