Area Players Gain Finals in Seniors’ Tennis Sectionals
Niesi Sie, resident pro at Braemar Country Club, Gordon Davis and Tom Springer were among the top area tennis players to advance to the finals of the 55th Southern California Senior Sectional Championships at The Racquet Centre in Universal City on Saturday.
Sie of Van Nuys defeated Steve Simons of Los Angeles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, in the semifinals of the men’s 45-and-over division. Sie will play Dick Johnsrude of Riverside in today’s final. In other semifinal matches, Davis of Encino beat Howard Lee of Hidden Hills, 6-3, 6-2, in the men’s 50-and-over. Davis will face Fred Scott of Los Angeles.
Springer of Canoga Park whipped Fred Ruess of Los Angeles, 6-4, 6-0, in the men’s 55-and over. Springer will play Gary Russell of San Pedro, who beat Gene Powell of Northridge, 6-4, 7-5.
In the women’s competition, Shannon Gordon of Van Nuys defeated Peggy Reilly of Playa del Rey, 6-1, 6-2, in the 30-and-over division. Gordon will play Kathy Lesage of Goleta, who beat Kim Schram of Tarzana, 6-2, 6-0.
Gilla and John Sundahl of Calabasas defeated Joseph Loveland and Tamara Sherwood of Los Angeles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the super-senior, mixed-doubles competition.
In the father-and-son division, Howard and Todd Lee of Hidden Hills will play H. M. Wammack and J. P. Wammack of Glendale.
