High School Roundup : Royal Wins on Homer by Jones

One swing by Royal High center fielder Jason Jones swung the outcome of a third-round Redondo-Palos Verdes baseball tournament game against visiting Alemany to the Highlanders, 8-6, Saturday afternoon.

With two out in the sixth inning and the score tied, 6-6, the Highlander senior drilled a one-and-two pitch by starter Matt Delavigne over the left-field fence for a two-run home run. The home run was Jones’ fourth of the year.

Delavigne (0-3), a right-hander, threw eight wild pitches and walked seven--four in the third inning--and allowed seven earned runs.

Alemany’s Joey Rosselli, in his second game after recovering from a fractured bone in his left hand, hit a home run with two on in the sixth to bring the Indians (11-9) back from a three-run deficit.

Rosselli also hit a home run Wednesday in his first game, a 3-1 win over Crespi in which he pitched a three-hitter.

There was no similar muzzling of Royal, which sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth and scored four runs on five hits to take a 6-3 lead.

Will Egan singled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by James Jones, who was three for four with two runs batted in. Sean Mitchell walked and Jason Jones, James’ twin, singled to load the bases.

Richie Naranjo hit a run-scoring single and, with one out, Mitchell scored on a wild pitch to push the Highlanders (9-12) ahead, 5-3.

Steven Bernstein loaded the bases with a single and Dennis Gildehaus’ squeeze bunt scored Jason Jones for Royal’s final run of the inning.

In other baseball games:

Thousand Oaks 9, Muir 0--Junior first baseman Scott Barkman was three for three with two home runs, a double and seven RBIs for the Lancers in the third-round game of the De La Salle tournament at Muir.

Barkman drove in Thousand Oaks’ first seven runs with a three-run home run in the first inning, an RBI ground-rule double in the third and another three-run home run in the fourth.

Pitchers John Bushart, Tony Siegal and Brian Snyder combined for a five-hitter as Thousand Oaks improved to 8-7.

Notre Dame 6, Gahr 4--The Knights scored three runs in the seventh inning of the third-round game of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament at Gahr.

Kevin Crosby singled to open the inning and scored from second base on a throwing error after Bruno Paniccia’s sacrifice bunt.

After Bobby Hughes and Kevin Milligan walked, Vinnie Orlando singled in Hughes with the winning run.

Louie Tapia beat out an infield hit to load the bases and Chad Ratliff walked to force in Notre Dame’s final run.

Sophomore pitcher Cary Wichmann improved to 7-0 for Notre Dame (15-2). Wichmann gave up 11 hits, struck out six and walked three in 6 1/3 innings. Hughes picked up his third save.

Crespi 4, Buena Park 0--Senior left-hander Mark Kurtz threw a two-hitter, walked none and struck out six as Crespi (7-11-2) won a third-round consolation-bracket game of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament at Crespi.

Kurtz (1-3) faced one batter over the minimum.

Tim Weir and Brodie Van Wagonen each had two hits and drove in runs in Crespi’s three-run sixth inning as the Celts broke open a 1-0 game.

BOYS’ TRACK

Oak Park, behind a pair of victories in the relay events, scored 81 points to win the 37-team Russell Cup meet at Carpinteria High.

Oak Park recorded a meet record 3 minutes, 24.6 seconds in the 1,600-meter relay behind Rich Frank, Jess Garner, Kent Richter and Jason Stein.

Frank, Richter, Stein and Brian Kane teamed to win the 400-meter relay in 43.7.

Richter won the 200 meters in 22.7, Garner took 110 high hurdles in 15.6 and Stein won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.1.

In the field events, Mitch Harris was second in the long jump at 20 feet, 7 inches and third in the triple jump at 39-7 1/2.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Campbell Hall d. Windward, 15-13, 18-16, 15-6--Will Fruehling had 20 kills and Don White 16 for the Vikings (13-1) in a nonleague match at Culver City High.
