Dalton Smith, 53; Featured Trumpeter for Many Big Bands
Dalton Smith, 53, a lead trumpeter with many of the big bands for several years, including a lengthy stint with Stan Kenton, died Wednesday of cancer.
His wife, Marilyn King of the King Sisters vocal group, said she was taking him to a San Fernando hospital when he died in her arms.
A veteran trumpeter on the Los Angeles scene for many years, Smith joined the Kenton band in 1959. Over the years he played with the Nelson Riddle, Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen and David Rose orchestras.
He also worked recording dates with Kenny Rogers, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Sarah Vaughan, his wife said.
A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints on Burbank Boulevard in Sherman Oaks.
