THE PREPS : Baseball Roundup : Laguna Hills’ Sheff Sets County Record for Career Hits
Chris Sheff broke the Orange County career record for hits as Laguna Hills High School defeated Laguna Beach, 14-1, Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League baseball game at Laguna Hills.
Sheff entered the game tied with Jeff Osborn of La Quinta (1982-84) with 116 hits. Sheff singled in the first inning to break the record. He had two more hits and two runs batted in for the game.
Rob Milo (6-0) had a no-hitter through five innings, but gave up a lead off single to Jeremy Megroz in the sixth. Milo pitched a four-hitter, striking out three.
In other Pacific Coast League action:
Orange 8, Costa Mesa 7--Orange (13-10, 7-5) scored two runs with one out in the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory and clinch third place in the league.
Trabuco Hills 9, Woodbridge 5--Frank Waugh and Jeff Carrao each had two hits and two RBIs for Trabuco Hills (13-5, 10-2) at UC Irvine.
In the Century League:
Foothill 7, Villa Park 4--Mike Russell worked out of a bases-loaded jam and the Knights (15-7, 9-3) scored six runs in the sixth inning for the victory at Foothill. Villa Park led 4-0 and had the bases loaded with no outs in the fourth when Russell (1-0) entered the game. He struck out the first batter, then got an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.
Canyon 2, Santa Ana Valley 0--Chris Pena scattered a six hits and struck out five for Canyon (8-13, 4-8) at Santa Ana Valley. Marty Little hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth for Canyon.
Santa Ana 5, El Modena 0--Jesse Rojas (5-3) pitched a three-hitter, striking out five, for the Saints (14-8, 9-3) at Santa Ana.
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 5, Capistrano Valley Christian 0--Mark Carrillo (4-0) pitched a two-hitter, striking out five, for Orange Lutheran (12-8-1, 9-2) at Oso Park in Mission Viejo.
In the Academy League
Liberty Christian 18, Heritage 0 (5 innings)--John Van Dyke had three hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs for Liberty Christian at Bellis Park in Buena Park.
