Actor Edward James Olmos and Mexican film maker Jorge Rivero are the arts honorees at the May 5 !Ole Salsa! awards banquet, billed as a celebration of the salsa music form. The annual presentation by the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts draws an array of celebrities. A salsa band and dance group will perform. A posthumous tribute to Latin jazz musicians Charlie Palmieri and Eddie Cano will be part of the third annual two-day Los Angeles Salsa Festival on May 20 and 21 at John Anson Ford Theatre, 3208 Cahuenga Blvd., West Hollywood. Cal State Dominguez Hills will honor 30 outstanding Latino students with $5,000 in scholarships at the 1989 Latino Honor Awards banquet Friday at the Hotel Ibis in Carson.
