U.S. Team Faces Taipei in Baseball
AUSTIN, Tex. — A two-game baseball series between the U.S. national team and the Chinese-Taipei (Taiwan) national team will be played in Austin on July 4 and 5.
The city of Austin, University of Texas, Chamber of Commerce and YMCA officials announced Tuesday they had agreed to host the series at UT’s Disch-Falk Field.
University officials said they expect more than 7,000 fans at each of the games, which will be a rematch of the 1988 World Championships in Italy, where the United States swept Taiwan 9-1 and 6-3.
Austin lawyer Chris Knepp, who serves on the board of directors of the U.S. Baseball Federation, said more than 30 American cities wanted to host the two-game series.
“Through our contacts in the U.S. Baseball Federation, we made it known that the city of Austin was very much interested in hosting the two games,” Knepp said.
