Gert-Jan Theunisse of the Netherlands left a pack of 20 riders with 1 1/2 miles remaining and easily won the rain-dampened fourth stage of the Tour de Trump bicycle race at Winchester, Va., but Dag Otto Lauritzen of Norway maintained his overall lead.
Theunisse, 26, the 11th-place finisher in last year’s Tour de France, was timed in 4 hours 41 minutes 54 seconds in the 111.5-mile road race from Gettysburg, Pa., to Winchester in north-central Virginia.
Eric Vanderaerden of Norway, winner of Monday’s third stage, out-sprinted Davis Phinney of Boulder, Colo., and finished second in 4:42:04. Phinney’s effort, in the same time as Vanderaerden, was the first top-three finish by an American.
