Countywide
Four county schools have been named winners in the 1989 National Secondary School Recognition Program, it was announced Tuesday.
The schools are: Vista High; Mt. Carmel High in Poway; Valley Center Middle School and Oak Grove Middle School in Jamul. Eight county secondary schools had been nominated by state Schools Supt. Bill Honig.
A total of 176 public secondary schools from 42 states were selected from among 500 submitted by all states to the U. S. Department of Education. California had the most winners, with 24 out of 47 that were nominated.
Federal administrators screened the schools on the basis of written applications and visits to the schools by review teams of principals.
In 1984, Fallbrook High, Chula Vista High, Santana High in Santee and Twin Peaks Middle School in Poway won the award. In 1985 Borrego Springs High and Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway won. In 1987, Orange Glen High in Escondido, Southwest High in Imperial Beach and Torrey Pines High were selected.
