WORLD : Shamir’s Palestine Voting Plan OKd

JERUSALEM — Parliament today approved Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir’s Palestinian election plan after he defeated a challenge by right-wing legislators in his Likud Party who argued the plan could lead to a Palestinian state.
The tally was 43 to 15, with 11 abstaining, in a vote of confidence in the government that was considered a test for the plan. Fifty-one members of the 120-seat Knesset, or Parliament, were absent for the vote.
