CSUN’S Chong Earns All-CCAA Honors

Cal State Northridge first baseman Chae-Ho Chong was selected to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. first team in a vote of conference coaches.

Chong, a senior who batted .308 with 10 home runs and 36 runs batted in, was the only Matador selected.

CSUN senior pitchers Fili Martinez and Robert Wheatcroft and freshman outfielder Craig Clayton were named to the second team. Martinez, a left-hander, was 8-4 with a 2.45 earned-run average. Wheatcroft, a right-hander, was 11-3 with a 4.11 ERA. Clayton batted a team-high .314 with six home runs and 32 RBIs.

Jude Kylander and Steve Lazarus were honored as Cal State Northridge senior athletes of the year in a ceremony Tuesday at the Airtel Plaza Hotel.

Kylander was captain of the women’s team that won the Division II swimming and diving national championship. She won three individual titles and participated on 13 national championship relay teams in four years.

Lazarus was captain of the soccer team that placed second in the nation in December. He was selected to the Division II All-American team and was named the CCAA’s most valuable player in a vote of conference coaches.

Jerry Campbell, an assistant coach for the Cal State Northridge football team the past three seasons, has resigned to become head football coach at St. Bernard High in Playa del Rey.

Campbell was defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Northridge, joining the staff in the spring of 1986 when Bob Burt was hired as head coach. Campbell previously coached at Butte Junior College, Western State (Colo.) College, Boulder (Colo.) High and Chico State (Calif.).

St. Bernard, which competes in the Camino Real League of the Southern Section Division VII, had a 5-5 record last season.

Karen Shin’s participation in the NCAA Division I women’s tennis championships did not last as long as expected.

The former Chaminade High standout was upset in the second round by USC’s Stephanie London, 7-6, 6-4, Monday in Gainesville, Fla.

Shin, a senior at Cal, was the tournament’s eighth-seeded player. She made the quarterfinal round last season.

Cindy Byrne of Canyon High was declared academically ineligible and did not run in the Southern Section 4-A Division track prelims Saturday at Camarillo High.

Byrne, the defending 4-A Division champion in the 300-meter low hurdles, won the Golden League finals in that event and the 100 low hurdles May 5.

Susan Bluhm, a sprinter at Cal Lutheran, was selected the most valuable athlete on the women’s track team.

Pam Beaver was named the most valuable freshman and received the coach’s award. Other award winners included: Lorraine Lewis (most inspirational); Dena Pierce (most improved); Janet Hinrichsen (muscle award); and J’ne Furrow (team captain).

Moorpark College will hold a soccer clinic at 3:30 p.m. today for players interested in competing on the men’s team next season. Moorpark will field both men’s and women’s teams next fall.

Palisades and El Camino Real highs will attempt to repeat as boys’ and girls’ team swimming champions when the City Section championships get under way at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach at 6 tonight. Palisades will face stern competition from Birmingham and El Camino Real. The Conquistadore girls will be pushed by Palisades and Birmingham.
