La Canada Flintridge Recycling Advances
Under threat of losing its dumping privileges in Glendale’s Scholl Canyon Landfill, the La Canada Flintridge City Council took steps Tuesday to start a voluntary citywide recycling program by January.
Glendale last year ordered La Canada Flintridge and all other cities that use Scholl to start recycling programs in order to reduce the amount of trash dumped there and to extend the life of Glendale’s only municipal landfill.
An 11-member advisory committee concluded after a seven-month study that a curb-side recycling program would cost each of the 6,500 households in La Canada Flintridge about $1 to $2 a month.
Residents will be asked to collect glass and plastic containers, aluminum and metal cans, and newspapers in containers to be provided by the city-sponsored service and picked up along with residents’ regular trash.
Residents pay individually for their own private trash pickup. However, fees could be significantly increased if haulers are forced to use other, far-away landfills, committee members warned.
The council’s action authorizes city officials to seek bids from potential recycling contractors.
Glendale began its citywide recycling program in December.
