Southern Section Softball Playoffs
In another 5-A game:
St. Joseph 1, Simi Valley 0--Senior left-hander Crissy Oliver of Simi Valley (21-8) threw a two-hitter and struck out eight to give her a school single-season record of 176, but the Pioneers picked up only one hit in a first-round game at St. Joseph.
Senior right-hander Lisa Fernandez struck out 20 en route to a complete-game victory for the Jesters (21-1).
Cathy Beasley, who singled in the fourth, was Simi Valley’s only baserunner.
Oliver (10-6) did not allow a walk and gave up only two singles. Michelle Ovrique knocked in the only run with an infield single in the seventh.
3-A DIVISION
Saugus 2, South Hills 1--Senior left-hander Cathy Lewis threw a four-hitter for Saugus (18-7) and struck out 12 to give her a school-record 309 strikeouts for the season as the Centurions won the first-round game at Saugus.
Brandy Rico’s triple with two out in the sixth scored Amanda Colvin, who had singled, and Corinne Ochoa, who had walked.
2-A DIVISION
Notre Dame 2, St. Bernard 0--The Knights (15-9) used back-to-back bunts to score their runs in the third inning of a first-round game at Notre Dame.
Kim Fischer squeezed in Vivian Caballo and Kristi Mullen followed with a bunt that scored Gina Pinto. Becca Berline (15-8) struck out 11 and walked three for the win.
