Border Patrol Agents Arrest Woman and Confiscate 767 Pounds of Cocaine
SAN ONOFRE — Border Patrol agents seized 767 pounds of cocaine and arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of drug smuggling Tuesday at the San Onofre checkpoint, authorities said.
The narcotics, estimated to have a street value of $45 million, and Robin Mary Whatley were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration and to the U. S. Customs Service, Mike Gregg, a San Diego police public information officer, said. He added that it was “the third major shipment” in two months.
On April 6, 547 pounds of cocaine were seized at the checkpoint, and 969 pounds were seized on May 8 south of Imperial Beach near the U. S.-Mexican border, he said.
Gregg said he did not know if the three seizures were linked, but the DEA is investigating Tuesday’s incident.
The seizures at the checkpoint are usually the result of random searches, Gregg added.
