Alan Eagleson, head of the National Hockey League Players Assn. for 22 years, came under attack from attorneys hired by the union to assess his performance.
“Questions are getting answered, and there are some answers the players don’t like,” said Kevin Dineen, player representative for the Hartford Whalers during a union meeting in Palm Beach, Fla.
“A lot of players weren’t concerned one way or the other about how the union is being run until some facts were brought up.”
Several player representatives said they want to talk with their teammates before a vote is taken on whether to fire Eagleson.
Representatives of all 21 NHL teams met with Ed Garvey, former head of the NFL Players Assn. and player agents Rich Winter of Edmonton and Ron Salcer of Los Angeles. The three men, hired by the union to gather information, challenged Eagleson on grounds of incompetence, conflict of interest and accountability.
Eagleson, whose seven-year contract expires in 1993, also met with the players. He declined to speak with reporters.
