THE SIDELINES : New Zealand Yacht Crosses Line 1st

TOKYO — A 56-foot yacht skippered by Ian Margin of New Zealand crossed the finish line first today after 31 days at sea in the 6,120-mile Auckland-Fukuoka Yamaha Cup yacht race.
An organizing official, Yuji Akiyama, said the yacht Future Shock arrived at Hakata in southwestern Japan at 12:13 a.m. with a race time of 31 days, 13 minutes, 50 seconds. The yacht stopped in Fiji and Guam after leaving Auckland, New Zealand.
Akiyama said that after all the racers arrive in Hakata, the winner will be determined using handicaps based on such factors as the size of each yacht.
