Tanker That Spilled Oil Released for Repairs
NEWPORT, R.I. — A Greek tanker that ran aground and spilled 420,000 gallons of oil in Narragansett Bay last week was inspected Saturday as its crew prepared to move it to a dry dock for repairs, officials said.
The Coast Guard said officials from New York inspected the vessel, the World Prodigy, to make sure there would be no problem bringing it into New York Harbor for repairs. A tugboat was scheduled to arrive late Saturday night and the ship was tentatively scheduled to leave today.
A federal magistrate late Friday released the ship and its captain, Iakovos Georgudis, who faces two federal misdemeanor charges he violated pollution laws.
