The head of a Salvadoran right-wing think tank was shot to death by unidentified gunmen while driving in a residential area of San Salvador, officials said. Edgar Chacon, the president of the private Institute of International Relations, was shot while his car was stopped at a traffic light. His wife was driving but was not hurt. Chacon, 38, was well known for his sharp criticisms of the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, but he also assailed the ruling right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance for being too moderate toward the rebels. Although an armed forces spokesman attributed the attack to the FMLN, a rebel statement denied involvement.
