Sometimes, a team wins despite itself. For instance, a trio of Reseda pitchers issued 16 walks, but the team still managed to defeat Woodland Hills East, 9-8, in a Western Division District 20 game at Taft High on Saturday.

East (8-5) stranded 16 runners, including three in the eighth inning and two in the ninth.

“It seemed like every time we loaded the bases or got a couple of guys into scoring position, there were already two outs,” East Coach Matt Borzello said.

Holding a 9-8 lead with two on and two out in the eighth, Mario Valencia relieved starter Mark McClain and walked Rich Shapiro to load the bases. Valencia struck out Carey Wilbur to end the threat.
