RUNNING
Promoters no longer bill the Scripps Ranch Fourth of July 10K as one of the county’s premiere running events, touting it instead as a community run.
Put on by the Scripps Ranch Old Pros, the 11th annual race, which at one time attracted some of the area’s top runners, will get under way Tuesday at 7 a.m. along Red Ceder Drive in Scripps Ranch. About 2,000 runners are expected; day-of-race entries will be accepted for $15.
“It’s kind of special because it’s a community activity,” said Brian Butler, one of the event’s organizers. “It’s basically for people looking for something to do on the Fourth of July.”
The course rings Miramar Lake, and much of the final mile is downhill, which provides for a fast finish.
Race records are McCormack’s 30:13 in 1985 and Pat Puntous’ 34:41 in 1984.
