Night Bass Action at Silverwood

Night fishing for striped bass has been productive for anglers at San Bernardino’s Lake Silverwood, according to lake expert Greg Silks.

On a recent outing, the Alta Loma resident, who has fished the reservoir for 12 years, caught three stripers weighing 32, 27 and 19 pounds.

LAKE MEAD--Striped bass being caught mainly in lower basin, averaging two-four pounds, biting on anchovies at 35-50 feet. Catfish picking up, averaging about two pounds, biting in shallow water. Most baits working. Largemouth bass slow.

LAKE HAVASU--Largemouth bass bite slow, with most fish feeding on shad, which are spawning. Striped bass small, biting throughout lake on surface, with Wiglstik lures working best. Bigger fish biting less consistently on anchovies at 45 feet. Catfish picking up, biting on anchovies at 45 feet.

BULLHEAD CITY--Striped bass averaging five pounds biting in river, a few biting in lake. Catfish biting in river and lake. Catfish biting in coves.

SALTON SEA--Bank fishermen catching orangemouth corvina to 17 pounds off North Shore. Boat fishermen doing best at Niland Marina and Bombay Beach. Live bait best bet. Croaker bite good throughout sea, best in afternoons. Flathead catfish averaging 15 pounds biting at Alamo River. Channel catfish averaging 4-7 pounds biting at All-American Canal.

LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass biting off dropoffs at 12-15 feet in mornings, then moving into shallows during day. Bill Cedar, Las Olivas, 11 1/2-pound bass. Catfish between 9-11 pounds biting primarily at east end. Mackerel best bet. Trollers doing best for trout, mainly at dam. Two colors and pearl-colored needlefish working best mornings, seven colors best in afternoons. Jason Gurber, 6, Ventura, 3-4 red ear perch, ties lake record.

LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass averaging just over eight pounds. Live crawfish and plastic worms working best. John Lucy, Whittier, 11-pound bass. George Szabo, Los Angeles, 11-pound bass. Trollers using four-five colors doing best for trout, but some limits taken by bait fishermen. Matt Parker, Torrance, five trout, nine pounds, all caught on live nightcrawlers. Catfish biting best in Long Valley. Gloria Vester, Ventura, 18-pound catfish.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass between five and 10 pounds biting mainly in marina and channel. Largemouth bass bite fair throughout lake. Aaron Martins, Canoga Park, four bass to three pounds. Andrew Maguire, 2, Encino, 1 1/2-pound perch using a Snoopy fishing pole baited with nightcrawlers. Some limits of trout. Most baits working.

LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass biting best in early mornings. Spinner baits and crank baits working best. Bob Murdock, Van Nuys, two nine-pound bass. Larry Scaggs, Lancaster, 8 1/2-pound bass. Catfish biting best on east side. Mackerel and garlic cheese working best. Trout slow, biting best in deep water.

LAKE CASTAIC--Largemouth bass biting in both lakes. Plastic worms and nightcrawlers working best. Fred Clary, Hollywood, 9 1/4-pound bass, caught in upper lake. Catfish best in upper lake. Clyde Sanchez, La Crescenta, five catfish, 39 1/2 pounds, largest 12 1/2. Crappie and bluegills biting consistently in both lakes. Mini-jigs and meal worms working best.

IRVINE LAKE--Catfish biting in deep shadded holes during day. Biting throughout lake at night. Boat dock and Santiago Flats and dam best areas. Mackerel and chicken livers working best. Gilbert Alvarde, Anaheim, 15-pound catfish. Max Hill and Rene Attaway, Fountain Valley, 10 catfish, 45 pounds. Crappie biting best off docks, but bigger fish being taken at dam. Stefanie Ramsey, Brea, eight crappie, 4 1/2 pounds. Largemouth bass biting best on plastic worms. Dam, West Shore and rock slide areas best. Trout biting in deep water, with trollers at 25 feet doing best.

LAKE SKINNER--Catfish providing most action, biting throughout lake. Rob Rude, Riverside, 5-10 catfish. Crappie biting best at Launch Ramp 2. Robert Luna, Colton, 2-4 crappie. Largemouth bass and trout slow.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped biting best at Cleghorn Cove and off the points in the channel. Mark Gwatney, Summit Valley, 25- and 20-pound stripers. Largemouth bass bite fair. Catfish biting best at Cleghorn and channel.

BISHOP AREA--Crowley: Rainbow trout biting best on worms at Layton Springs. Some to two pounds. Owens River north of Crowley Lake opened July 1 with 10-fish limit and barbless hooks no longer necessary. Sabrina: Several limits of pan-sized rainbows, biting on most baits. South: Rainbows to 14 inches being taken from shore and boats. Intake II: Salmon eggs producing limits of pan-sized rainbows. Owens River: Brown trout to five pounds biting on crickets, Berkley Power Bait and small nightcrawlers.

JUNE LAKE AREA--Fishing generally good, with Power Bait, red salmon eggs and worm-marshmallow combinations all working. Trolling slow with small spinners working best. Silver and Grant lakes best for trollers using silver and black Rapalas on surface.

BRIDGEPORT--Bridgeport Reservoir best in area, with boaters fishing near Rainbow Point catching more and bigger fish.
