Anaheim Proposes Victores to Replace Mullen as Coach
Raul Victores has been recommended as the varsity football coach at Anaheim High School.
“He still has to be approved,” Anaheim Athletic Director Dan Miller said Thursday. The Anaheim school district board will discuss his hiring when it meets Aug. 3.
Victores, 27, would replace Ted Mullen, who resigned to become an assistant coach at Palm Desert High School.
It will be the first varsity coaching position for Victores, who also teaches social studies at Anaheim. He has been freshman coach at Anaheim the past two years.
“This is a big step in some ways, but it’s not in other ways,” said Victores, who graduated from Anaheim in 1980. “I’ve spent a lot of time the last two years around Mullen and (Anaheim assistant Bob) Salerno. I’ve observed them and worked with them.”
Despite his lack of varsity experience, Victores says he can adjust quickly.
“I’ve also been coaching the kids through their spring and summer workouts,” he said.
Miller agreed: “We interviewed some people, (but with Victores) we felt like we had someone who knew the kids, knew the program and it was time to give him a chance.”
