Temple’s Ground Breaking Scheduled
Kehillat Ma’arav, a synagogue that has met in a Brentwood church for the past eight years, will hold a ground breaking Sunday at its new 21st Street home in Santa Monica.
Plans call for two buildings across the street from the Crossroads School to be gutted and converted into a sanctuary, classrooms and office space, said Sheila Sloman, executive director of the synagogue.
The celebration, which starts at 4 p.m., will include dancing in the streets with Torah scrolls and a traditional klezmer band, she said. The portion of 21st Street just south of Olympic Boulevard will be closed between 3 and 6 p.m. to accommodate the ground breaking. Kehillat Ma’arav, also known as the Westside Congregation, has a membership of 220 families.
It is expected to move into its new home by the end of the year.
