Exxon Cancels Drilling Project: The nation’s largest oil company says it has scrapped the project located amid Mayan ruins in a Guatemalan rain forest after strident opposition from environmental and archeological officials. It spent $21.4 million during four years of preliminary testing at two sites in central Guatemala, including the government-protected El Ceibal national park in the country’s heavily forested northern Peten province, Exxon said. The company received permission to drill from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, but Culture Ministry archeologists in late May physically blocked Exxon workers from moving equipment into the park.
