Twelve participants in the Summer Youth Employment Training Program of the West San Gabriel Valley Consortium will be recognized for their performance on the job by the county Department of Community and Senior Citizens Services. The recipients were selected from 900 eligible youth workers, ages 14-21, who live in Alhambra, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Montebello, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel and Temple City. The awards presentation will be at 2 p.m. today Thursday, Aug. 24 at Monterey Park City Hall, 320 W. Newmark Ave. The recipients are Quyen My Phan, Vinh Thieu Ngo, Loan Hy Tran, Grisel Villegas, Domingo Sanchez, Sammy Chan, Raymond Castro, Evon Marie Villegas, Juan Medrano, Araceli Ibarra, Khan (Susan) Tuong and Jose Rodriguez.

A county resolution of commendation has been presented to California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Rojas of the Baldwin Park office for his courage in saving the life of a motorist who was trapped in a burning car. Rojas also has been awarded the state Medal of Valor for his action in pulling the woman to safety.
