State health officials issued a health advisory to alert the public that elevated levels of the toxin which causes paralytic shellfish poisoning were found in three mussel samples. Samples taken from off the coastlines near the San Mateo-Santa Cruz County line, Pacific Grove in Monterey County and Point Reyes in Marin County were each found to contain well over the alert level of PSP toxin in shellfish, which is 80 micrograms per 100 grams of meat, Department of Health Services Director Kenneth W. Kizer said. Kizer noted that the annual quarantine on sport-harvested mussels is in effect from May 1 to Oct. 31 throughout the entire California coastline.
