THE SIDELINES : Rust College Will Honor ‘Magic’

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. — Lakers star Earvin (Magic) Johnson will be honored Sept. 7 with an honorary doctorate by Rust College.
The private school will bestow a doctor of philosophy in humanities on Johnson, 30. Rust College spokeswoman Sharon Luvene said the honorary degree will honor Johnson for his work for the United Negro College Fund, which benefits Rust and 42 other black institutions. The fund gives about $500,000 a year to Rust, Luvene said.
