The World : 22 Slain on Train in India
Twelve masked Sikh militants armed with automatic rifles stormed aboard a passenger train at a remote station in northern Punjab state and massacred at least 22 Hindu passengers, a police official said. Director General K.P.S. Gill of the Punjab police said at least 30 Hindus were wounded in the attack, 10 seriously. The English-language Tribune, published in Chandigarh, Punjab’s capital, put the toll at 70 dead and 150 wounded. Police blamed the Khalistan Commando Force, one of the most hard-line groups fighting to create a Sikh nation called Khalistan, for the attack in Kabrawana, 125 miles south of the Sikh holy city of Amritsar.
