LOCAL : Marine Dies in San Clemente Crash
One Marine was killed and another was injured early this morning when the speeding car in which they were riding slammed into a parked car in San Clemente, police said.
The driver, Lee E. Sears, a Marine based at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County, was traveling at 80 m.p.h. in the 3900 block of South El Camino Real at 1:10 a.m. when he apparently lost control of the car and collided with a parked car and two palm trees, said San Clemente police dispatcher Pat Dolphin.
The passenger, who was not identified until relatives could be notified, died at the scene, Dolphin said. Sears was taken to Mission Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where he remains in stable condition.
Sears is being held on a charge of vehicular homicide, Dolphin said.
