Two Fishermen, Dog Rescued by Navy
A Navy helicopter rescued two San Diego fishermen and their dog Wednesday after their boat capsized off Southern California, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
Boat captain John Mangiapane and his crewman, Mat Davis, were pulled out of the water about 9 a.m. after their 46-foot commercial fishing boat, the Lavita, sank 50 miles west of San Clemente Island, spokesman Peter Adolph said.
The men, who floated on a life raft dropped to them by the Navy about 8:20, were in the water a total of about 40 minutes after the boat capsized, he said.
After a Coast Guard jet made the initial sighting, a helicopter from the amphibious assault ship Tripoli picked up the men and their dog. There were no injuries, Adolph said.
