LOCAL : Bomb Found in Northridge Mailbox
Los Angeles police bomb squad technicians safely detonated a small homemade explosive device discovered by a Northridge man in his mailbox, authorities said this morning.
The device was found Wednesday in the mailbox in the 17200 block of Superior Street, Officer Mike Schwehr said. No one was injured when the device was blown up about 6 p.m. in a bomb squad detonation trailer, he said. The investigation is being handled by the department’s Criminal Conspiracy Unit.
Detective Ron Douglas said that the incident appeared to be a prank and that the mailbox was probably chosen because it was made of brick and would have easily been destroyed by the blast. “Kids love putting these in brick mailboxes,” he said.
The name of the man who lives at the house was not disclosed. There were no suspects in the case.
