Gasoline Prices Edge Down: The cost of a gallon of gas dropped again by more than a penny, but the downturn still left drivers paying about 7 cents more per gallon than they did last summer, before the Valdez oil spill pushed prices up 20 cents a gallon, said Trilby Lundberg, who surveys prices at 12,000 gas stations across the country. Since the post-Valdez average price peaked May 18 at $1.18 a gallon, the cost of gasoline has dropped to $1.09 a gallon, Lundberg said. The price is more than a penny, or 1.37 cents, less than it was Aug. 25.
