South Roundup : Allen Runs, Passes for Scores as No. 7 Clemson Wins, 27-7
Clemson tailback Terry Allen ran for one touchdown and passed for another as the seventh-ranked Tigers smothered Virginia Tech’s ground game in a 27-7 victory Saturday night at Blacksburg, Va.
The bulk of the scoring by both teams came during 32 seconds at the end of the third quarter. Before that, Clemson led, 13-0.
Allen completed a 66-yard option pass to flanker Gary Cooper with 34 seconds left in the quarter.
Virginia Tech’s Marcus Mickel then returned the kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
Virginia Tech recovered an onside kick to open the game. After the Hokies failed on their own option pass attempt, Clemson linebacker Levon Kirkland intercepted a deflected pass and ran 47 yards into the end zone to make it 27-7.
Clemson is now 3-0, the Hokies 1-1-1.
Virginia 17, Georgia Tech 10--Shawn Moore connected on passes covering 61 and 42 yards to tight end Bruce McGonnigal to set up a touchdown and field goal, leading the Cavaliers to an Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the Yellow Jackets at Atlanta.
Virginia, 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, broke a 7-7 tie nine minutes before halftime on freshman Terry Kirby’s three-yard run. The score came one play after McGonnigal completed a 61-yard pass play.
McGonnigal, who had six catches for 157 yards, carried his 42-yard reception to the Yellow Jacket 19, setting up a 30-yard field goal by Jake McInerney late in the third quarter.
It was the 16th consecutive ACC setback for Tech, which is 0-2 this season.
North Carolina St. 27, Wake Forest 17--Shane Montgomery completed 24 of 39 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns as the 19th-ranked Wolfpack won at Winston Salem, N.C.
Montgomery’s performance lifted the Wolfpack to 3-0 and overshadowed the play of Wake Forest quarterback Phil Barnhill, a left-handed junior making only his second career start who completed 21 of 40 passes for 321 yards.
Wake Forest is now 0-2.
Maryland 23, Western Michigan 0--Neil O’Donnell threw two touchdown passes in the final 2:26 of the first half and the Terrapins intercepted four first-half passes in a win at College Park, Md.
Maryland (1-2) recorded its first shutout in nearly two years in a game that began in a heavy downpour. Western Michigan fell to 2-1.
O’Donnell, who completed 15 of 20 passes for 212 yards, put Maryland in front 10-0 with a three-yard scoring pass to David Carr with 2:26 left in the first half.
Three plays after safety Kevin Fowlkes snagged Maryland’s fourth interception of the half, O’Donnell completed a 14-yard pass to Dean Green with 34 seconds left in the half for Maryland’s
William & Mary 24, VMI 17--Reserve quarterback Chris Hakel rallied the Indians to 21 second-half points in a driving rain as they came from behind for a win at Lexington, Va.
William & Mary is 2-0, VMI 0-3.
Tulane 17, SW Louisiana 10--Quarterback Deron Smith directed the Green Wave to a 68-yard touchdown drive to open the second half and set up a win in the Superdome.
