Canada May Join Hemisphere Group
OTTAWA — Canada is considering joining the Organization of American States after years of maintaining only observer status, according to an External Affairs Ministry official.
Spokeswoman Abbie Dann said Monday that the External Affairs Ministry has been reviewing relations with Latin and Central American nations and a decision whether to join could be made by the Canadian Cabinet before the end of October.
Dann said Canada has not joined the multilateral organization in the past because it has often proved ineffective dealing with major issues.
“Certainly things have changed in that part of the world . . . and over the years the organization has matured and grown a bit stronger,” Dann said.
The OAS was founded in 1948.
