‘Black Rain,’ ‘Sea of Love’ Tops at Box Office : WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

Fall box-office figures continued to climb slightly, as Paramount’s “Black Rain” posted opening numbers usually reserved for the holiday season. Director Ridley Scott’s stylish thriller, starring Michael Douglas in his first film role since “Wall Street,” grossed $9.7 million on 1,610 screens. In its second week, Al Pacino’s steam “Sea of Love” grossed $7.8 million, down 22% from its opening. Overall, the Top-10 box office is up 45% from a year ago.

* With the help of Marlon Brando’s first screen performance in eight years, MGM/UA’s anti-apartheid film “A Dry White Season” opened well on 17 screens for $202,507 a per-screen average of $11,912.
