High School Roundup : Birch Leads Estancia Girls Past Fountain Valley in Tennis
Dana Birch swept in singles, helping Estancia High School defeat Fountain Valley, 11-7, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Fountain Valley.
Estancia is ranked ninth in the Southern Section 4-A poll.
Birch, who is 27-1, won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Liz Collins and Molly Romm won, 7-6, 6-0, 6-2, and Shannon Curren and Sam Joyner won, 6-2, 7-5, 7-6, for Estancia (6-3).
In other nonleague tennis:
Sunny Hills 12, La Mirada 6--Joy Fulton and Nandita Sapre swept, 6-4, 7-6, 7-1, to lead Sunny Hills (7-1) at La Mirada.
Rosary 16, Valley Christian 2--Mindy Gomez won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, for Rosary ( 6-0).
Capistrano Valley 13, Edison 5--Page Bartelt won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, for visiting Capistrano Valley (5-0).
In Empire League tennis:
Katella 13, Esperanza 5--Lynn Vonusa won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for host Katella (9-1, 1-0).
Loara 14, Cypress 4--The sisters doubles team of Haliel and Euneil Kim won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for Loara (4-0, 1-0).
In Orange League tennis:
Valencia 12, Western 6--Julie Williams won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Allison Granger won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, for Valencia (7-2, 1-0).
In the Garden Grove League:
La Quinta 16, Kennedy 2--Ann Pham won, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5, and Nichole McLean won, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5 for host La Quinta.
In nonleague volleyball:
Newport Harbor 3, Woodbridge 2--Maureen McLaren had 20 kills as Newport Harbor won, 3-15, 15-9, 7-15, 15-5, 16-14.
Fountain Valley 3, El Toro 2--Tiffany Morenc had 19 kills to lead host Fountain Valley (4-2), 10-15, 7-15, 17-15, 15-13, 15-5.
Edison 3, Magnolia 1--Coby Hoffman had 13 kills, leading host Edison (2-3), 15-2, 15-5, 13-15, 15-4.
Irvine 3, University 1--Shawna Mickhatz had 17 kills to spark host Irvine, 15-2, 15-3, 7-15, 16-14. Irvine is 2-1, University is 3-2.
In Del Rey League water polo:
Mater Dei 6, Loyola 5--Charlie Wallace and Jeff Campbell each scored two goals for host Mater Dei (7-3, 2-0).
In Garden Grove League water polo:
Kennedy 20, Bolsa Grande 7--Shawn Miyasaki had six goals and Eric Ebell five as the Fighting Irish (4-0, 2-0) won at Golden West College.
In nonleague water polo:
Capistrano Valley 17, Costa Mesa 3--Paul Felton scored six goals as the Cougars (12-0) won at Saddleback College.
Dana Hills 14, Valencia 6--Mark Pakeric, Damon Skelton, and Jeremy Bouchman each scored three goals for visiting Dana Hills. Jeff Myers had three goals for Valencia.
Saddleback 9, Santa Ana Valley 5--Derek McCord scored four and Chris Buerger three to lead host Saddleback. Majid Ahmadi had 11 saves for Saddleback (5-2).
Tustin 9, Buena Park 7--Tustin’s Jim Smith scored three goals as the Tillers outscored visiting Buena Park, 6-1, in the second half.
