A Nevada County animal control officer shot and killed a puppy after it displayed symptoms of rabies. Ed Lackie, director of the county Animal Control Department, said the officer suspected rabies because the animal foamed at the mouth. The officer had ruled out distemper, which is marked by seizures and matted eyes, Lackie said. “Whatever it was, it was serious,” he said. The dog’s brain will be submitted to a lab in Sacramento to determine if it had rabies.
