USD Keeps Discovering and Winning

In three victories this fall, the University of San Diego football team--which will go for No. 4 tonight at Redlands at 6--has learned that it has a competent offense. Fullback Todd Jackson (117 rushing yards per game) leads a group that is averaging 346 yards and 24.3 points per game.

USD has also learned that it still has a dominating defense. Linebacker Lenny Territo (28 tackles) and nose tackle Dave Dunn (21 tackles, four sacks) head a unit permitting just 194 yards and 6.3 points per game.

Furthermore, USD has learned that its special teams are indeed special. Dave Bergmann has made five of his six field goal attempts and all eight extra points, and Greg Frinell is averaging 12 yards on punt returns and 22.3 on kickoff returns.

After last week’s game at Claremont, USD Coach Brian Fogarty said he discovered yet another pleasing aspect: “They can handle adversity.”

After trailing, 13-10, in the fourth quarter, USD scored 20 consecutive points in a 30-13 victory.

Tonight, the education process continues for the Toreros when they line up against a Bulldog team similar to their own. Redlands (1-2) runs the same wing T offense and plays the same aggressive defense as USD.

The series is tied at 7-7, including a 17-10 Redlands’ victory in 1988. In the third week of last season, Redlands scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to give USD its biggest margin of defeat.
