CS Fullerton, Still Without First Division I Win, Opens Big West Play Against UNLV

Cal State Fullerton, which emerged from its easiest nonconference schedule in years with only one victory, plays the first game of its Big West Conference season today, facing Nevada Las Vegas at noon in Santa Ana Stadium.

The Titans are 1-2-1, and their only victory is over Cal State Northridge, a Division II team. Fullerton lost to Northern Illinois and Colorado State, and tied San Diego State.

UNLV, 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big West, sustained two key injuries in a victory over New Mexico State last Saturday--to starting tailback Tommy Jackson, who hurt a knee, and starting quarterback Chuck Price, who has a broken finger on his throwing hand.

Derek Stott will start at quarterback, and either Marvin Eastman or Kyle Toomer will start at tailback.

Fullerton running back Mike Pringle, who is second in the nation in all-purpose running, will be seeking his fourth 100-yard game in a row. He is averaging 118 yards, despite being held to 14 in 10 carries during the season opener.

Fullback Darin Brightmon has been UNLV’s leading rusher, averaging 103 yards a game.

Fullerton reversed a nine-game losing streak against UNLV two years ago, and has won the past two games against the Rebels.
